Serving Others is Serving the Savior

July seems to have escaped me and I realize I haven't posted as much in the blog as I would have liked to. Luckily there are still a couple hours left in the month so I have time to squeeze in one last entry before midnight strikes.

Today while Elder Scott and I writing back and forth during his 60 minutes of internet time, I asked him if there was anything specific he had been thinking about or pondering this week. He immediately wrote back that he had been thinking about the importance of serving others and followed it up with this,"I love to serve others. Personally it just makes me happy to do, and I know that it is what Heavenly Father wants us to do. I love the scripture found in Matthew 25:40, "Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me."

Every time we serve someone, we are serving the Lord. There is no importance in who that person may be or what circumstance they are in because all of us are children of our Heavenly Father, and He loves each and every one of us equally. That is why it is important to always have a smile on your face, service on your mind, and love in your heart. Because every act of service we do is like doing service for our Savior."

Truly, this has always been one of the gifts and talents Elder Scott's has been blessed with. He loves serving others, and will be the first person to volunteer if he hears there is a need. It certainly was true during his high school years, and that desire has continued to grow and flourish during his time in Trujillo. A mission is most definitely all about service, so the 2 years he spends in Perú will continue to change him in all the best sort of ways.

Have you hugged a preacher today?

Elder Scott is in Chimbote South now and with the move came lots of other new changes. For one, he is now the District Leader of his area.. He is also one of the newly called Medical Missionaries in the Trujillo South Mission and he was asked to be the Zone English tutor. Needless to say, it's been a busy month for him as he learns about the new responsibilities all while he is trying to navigate around a new city, but Elder Scott tends to thrive under positive stress, so this should be a great time for him to learn and grow even more.

In his journal entries this week Elder Scott shared a story he simply titled, "I hugged a preacher today!" First a little background. Elder Scott and his new companion, Elder Chiza (he is fairly new to the mission field, and is from a tribe in Ecuador. How cool is that?!)  had an appointment to teach one of their investigators. When they showed up, he was just leaving to take his niece home and asked if they wouldn't mind coming back a little later. The story picks up when they arrived back at his home later that evening.

"When we got back this time there were 4 people there from the church of his oldest son (who attends an evangelical church). The 4 people were there talking to our investigator and included the preacher of that church. So naturally, we knocked on the door and then stood and smiled in the window so they undoubtedly knew it was us. Unfortunately that made the preacher kind of angry so he started to tell our investigator that not everyone are children of God and that we (the Mormons) are actually sons of the Devil, with all sorts of trash talk happening. That made Elder Chiza kind of mad. It made me chuckle for a bit. The man had no clue what he was talking about, and I honestly hope he repents and changes his ways because I don't think calling representatives of our Lord Jesus Christ "sons of the Devil" is going to look good on judgment day, but anyway, Elder Chiza was kind of upset how the preacher was trash talking us, the Book of Mormon, and all of our beliefs so he was ready to combat the trash talking with scripture, but I know that nothing productive ever can or will come from that because it would instantly be viewed as Bible bashing and cause instant contention (For the record, we believe the Bible and the Book of Mormon to both be the word of God that work hand-in-hand. The Book of Mormon is another testament of Jesus Christ and supports the teachings found in the Bible and vice-versa. Both books have the same purpose, which is to lead everyone back to our Father in Heaven through the gospel of Jesus Christ. We teach out of both of these sacred volumes of scripture and don't regard one higher than the other). So I told Elder Chiza not to do that and instead to take a pass-along card, write our names and our phone number on it, and to tell the people to call with any questions they might have. Then I told Elder Chiza we were gonna solve this problem with love, because there’s no problem that can’t be fixed by just adding more love ( great advice I got in the CCM from President Moore) So I told him when they come out to leave we’re just going to go for a handshake, and instead  pull each of them in for a genuine, true hug and just be very loving, friendly, and happy.  So that’s just what we did. It ticked them off a bit, but I felt good about it and know that it’s a lot more productive than anything else that we could have done. And maybe one day he’ll realize that what he believes is false and open up the door to the gospel. I know that it’s really, really true.

There’s not a single problem that can’t be solved by just adding more love, including preachers trying to confuse your investigators. Everyone is a child of God and God has the same love for them all and wants all of them to be able to come back and live with Him again. There are no exceptions. That’s why trying to burn people with scripture verses and Bible bashing is not the way of the Lord for missionary work because that usually stems from a place that lacks love. So I know that what we did was exactly the right call, and that’s the story of how I tightly hugged a preacher yesterday, haha!

I'm so grateful my son has these insights and that love for his fellowman comes naturally for him. It's so easy to get offended, discouraged, or angry when someone doesn't speak, think or act the way we do, but what a different world this would be if we looked at each other the way God looks at us, which is with a pure and perfect love.

Final night in Moche
There are not enough words for me to convey how much we appreciate all the love and support Elder Scott felt from the people in Moche, so I will just say THANK YOU and tell you how much I appreciate and love you all.

 Look at that DELICIOUS cake!!

 Ready or not....

 YUMMY!!

Good-bye's are hard, so how about "See ya again soon"

Introducing Elder Chiza, the newest companion

Sometimes missionary work can be a little "messy",
like when you're working on fixing an outhouse hole.

A good reminder for us all

Change is hard, but good.

Have you heard the familiar adage, "Nothing is as common as change."?

Change is happening all around us every day. Some change is unexpected and comes suddenly, other changes take place slowly and gradually, but one thing is certain and that is the knowledge that change is necessary in order to reach our full potential. This is our one and only chance at mortal life. We don't get a do-over so it's important to make the most of it by focusing on changes that will help us in the eternal scheme of life.

Back in 1979 Marvin J. Ashton spoke at a General Conference and said, "As opportunity for change reaches into our lives, as it always will, we must ask, "Where do I need development? What do I want out of life? Where do I want to go? How can I get there?" Weighing alternatives very carefully is a much needed prerequisite as one plans changes. In God's plan we are usually free to choose the changes we make in our lives and we are always free to choose how we will respond to the changes that come. We need not surrender our freedoms. But just as a compass is valuable to guide us out of the dense forest, so the gospel points the way as we walk the paths of life."

This week Elder Scott will be undergoing, with welcome arms, many changes in his life. He is being transferred about an hour south to the city of Chimbote and was asked to serve as a District Leader. He will have to adapt to a new apartment, new companion, new ward members, new investigators, new pensionista, new responsibilities....pretty much new everything, and you know what? He's excited about it because he knows it is through change that Heavenly Father can work miracles. He looks at change as an opportunity to grow even more and to depend on the Lord to guide him in the decisions that will be placed before him. As much as he is going to miss his friends and loved ones in Moche, he is ready and willing to do whatever the Lord asks of him next. In his words, "Whatever comes to pass doesn't matter. I'm just going to give it all my might, mind, heart, and strength and lift where I stand. I'll be the 'faithful Elder' and try to excel at whatever I'm asked to do." That's Heavenly Father's desire for all of us. He wants us to choose righteousness, choose happiness, choose to follow the Lord's ways because when we do, the rest will fall into place.

President Dieter F. Uchtdorf stated, When we are grateful to God in our circumstances, we can experience gentle peace in the midst of tribulation. In grief, we can still lift up our hearts in praise. In pain, we can glory in Christ's atonement. In the cold of bitter sorrow, we can experience the closeness and warmth of heaven's embrace. We sometimes think that being grateful is what we do after our problems are solved, but how terribly shortsighted that is. How much of life do we miss by waiting to see the rainbow before thanking God that there is rain?"

Change is inevitable, so make the most of it by relying on the Lord to help navigate you through it and think of the words our beloved prophet, Thomas S. Monson, spoke, "Despite the changes which come into our lives and with gratitude in our hearts, may we fill our days--as much as we can--with those things which matter most. May we cherish those we hold dear and express our love to them in word and in deed."

Another cool experience in Moche before changes happened.
